I always say to anybody whos going over to America for the first time, Whatever you do, go and see a popular mainstream film with a big audience. Because people shout out. You never get that in Britain. Everybodys so quiet, scared to laugh. Its like being in church.

Its very hard to be cut off in Glasgow because its such a small city. You know, we have the highest rate of per-capita imprisonment, certainly in Britain, maybe in Europe. We have a very high murder rate here. So most people will know someone whos been to prison.

The attempt to playa separate power rolethat is, a role apart from Europe, based on a special relationship with the United States, on being the head of the Commonwealthis about to be played out.
