As human beings, we are the only organisms that create for the sheer stupid pleasure of doing so. Whether its laying out a garden, composing a new tune on the piano, writing a bit of poetry, manipulating a digital photo, redecorating a room, or inventing a new chili recipe - we are happiest when we are creating.

Usually Im pretty myopic. Its hard for me to multi-task, so to speak. If Im in a show and Im creating a character, Im just completely into that. Its really hard for me to do anything else like write music. I have to sort of shut down different sides of my head and just focus.

I want hard stories, I demand them from myself. Hard stories are worth the difficulty. It seems to me the only way I have forgiven anything, understood anything, is through that process of opening up to my own terror and pain and reexamining it, re-creating it in the story, and making it something different, making it meaningful - even if the meaning is only in the act of the telling.

The key to creating the mental space before responding is mindfulness. Mindfulness is a way of being present: paying attention to and accepting what is happening in our lives. It helps us to be aware of and step away from our automatic and habitual reactions to our everyday experiences.
