When I create characters, I create a world to inhabit and they begin to feel very real for me. I dont belong in a psych ward, I dont think, but they become very real, like my own family, and then I have to say goodbye, close the door, and work on other things.

The deal is such that when I begin writing something, I open a door, and those characters come in, and then they wont leave, and so I live with them every day, all day. They are there with me when Im driving my kids to school, when Im standing in line at the grocery store.

In my twenties I would be skeptical of a bad haircut, but once you turn thirty its more about whether he a nice person and does he open the door for me. Once you turn thirty-five, its more about would he make a good father. And even if youre just liking somebody and digging on someone, I think you cant help but think in those terms.
