Well, painting is the one thing I do, that is just me. Its me and easels, and the pencils. And as long as I dont drool too much over the canvas, the colors come out pretty good. And its a chance to express all that Ive got inside, that I sometimes keep hidden. And I think thats why I paint big broad, wide open landscapes.
To my mind, it is the duty of the younger Negro artist, if he accepts any duties at all from outsiders, to change through the force of his art that old whispering I want to be white, hidden in the aspirations of his people, to Why should I want to be white? I am a Negro - and beautiful!
